Presidential Appointments:
The Candidates Pick the Oscars!
The 80th annual Academy Awards ceremony will take place Sunday night at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.  It is a strong Oscar field this year with stiff competition and it coincides with a similarly competitive presidential election.  We thought it would be fun and perhaps illuminating to get the candidates' takes on the field this year.  They were kind enough to oblige and they gave these Oscar-nominated films their seal of approval:

No End In Sight

“I loved this movie.  Dead on.  And so enjoyable.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much I'm thinking of adopting it as my campaign slogan vis-a-vis Iraq.”

SEN. JOHN MCCAIN
Best Documentary Feature:
There Will Be Blood

“A close second in terms of campaign slogans;  an obvious number one in terms of movies.  But I must say I've taken a lot of heat from certain members of the Republican establishment for liking this film.  Personally I found Daniel Plainview to be a madman, a chilling portrait of capitalism run amok.  However, they claimed he wasn't conservative enough.”

Best Picture:
Michael Clayton

“A lawyer burdened by guilt takes an ethical stand against corporate interests in favor of oppressed citizens?  Only in Hollywood.”

Worst Picture:
No Country for Old Men

“I really enjoyed this film.  The way it started off so great and with such promise, the way it built up and seemed to be heading to an inevitably exciting and victorious ending, and then the way it just sort of fizzled out at the end when it really mattered.  I can't put my finger on it, but something about the arc of the film really spoke to me.”

SEN. HILLARY CLINTON
Best Picture:
Daniel Day-Lewis

“I thought Viggo Mortensen was absolutely hilarious in 'Eastern Promises' but Daniel Day-Lewis gets my nod because I can't deny his power as an actor and because I have to admit that if I had an Oscar vote, I'd vote for him.  But I have to take this time to say his monologues were all fluff.  Sure, they were great speeches.  I mean, I love the milkshake scene as much as anyone.  No one can deny that Daniel Day-Lewis makes great speeches, but it was just pretty words with no meaning behind them and I think the American people want more.”

Actor in a Leading Role:
Michael Clayton

“A lawyer burdened by guilt takes an ethical stand against corporate interests in favor of oppressed citizens?  Come on.  I wasn't sure whether it was a drama or a comedy.”

Worst Picture:
Juno

“'The Cider House Rules', 'Vera Drake', the films of Rob Schneider.  Time after time Hollywood churns out movies celebrating the virtues of abortion.  I don't think I understood a single sentence that girl uttered, but I'm just happy Hollywood finally released a pro-life movie where I didn't have to see Seth Rogan's ass.”

GOV. MIKE HUCKABEE
Best Picture:
Cate Blanchett in "I'm Not There"

“I liked Cate Blanchett.  I loved the title.”

Actress in a Supporting Role:
Michael Clayton

“A lawyer burdened by guilt takes an ethical stand against corporate interests in favor of oppressed citizens?  Gimme a break.”
Worst Picture:
Javier Bardem

“Javier portrayed an incredibly powerful villain, the face of pure evil.  The way he felt no emotion, the way you thought you killed him and he just kept coming back for more, the way he never gave up until he robotically destroyed you.  I don't know.  He just reminded me of someone.”

SEN. BARACK OBAMA
Actor in a Supporting Role:
Hillary Clinton in "New Hampshire!"

“I apologize for breaking protocol but this whole election would have been over by now if her crocodile tears weren't so damn convincing in that debate before the New Hampshire primaries.  Oscar-worthy.”

Actress in a Leading Role:
Michael Clayton

“A lawyer burdened by guilt takes an ethical stand against corporate interests in favor of oppressed citizens?  Jesus, even I have to admit that tripe was too naïve and hopeful.”
