SEATTLE—Following a recent trend of high profile reunion tours, Nirvana has announced that it will perform a series of live concerts next summer. Only Dave Grohl has declined to sign onto the project, citing personal reasons. The band has yet to name a replacement drummer.
Basist Krist Novoselic says that he is "super psyched" that the band is finally getting back together, although admits, "it's a bummer about Dave."
Nirvana was at the forefront of Seattle's grunge scene during the 1990's and helped define a generation with it's smash hit "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
Novoselic said that the band will be playing a mix of new songs along with beloved classics like "Rape Me", "Territorial Pissings" and "Floyd the Barber." Novoselic declined to preview the new material, but said that the new songs are "fairly base heavy."
Grohl decided not to play on the tour because his own band, the Foo Fighters, are busy promoting their new album. He also cited unresolved personal issues between some of the band members.
"I really don't want to get into it." Grohl said. "I'll just say that we (Nirvana) don't all see eye to eye. The word 'Prima Donna' comes to mind."
Despite Grohl's absence, grunge fans are lining up to buy tickets for the tour which promises to be one of the biggest of the summer.
"They broke up before I had a chance to see them," said Seattle resident Cassie Mason, "I was like twelve and I really regretted it. But here's my chance!"
Many also expressed hope that the Nirvana tour will lead to other reunion tours from the grunge era.
"I really hope Dinosaur Jr. get back together," added Mason, "Oh and Pearl Jam! Whatever happened to them?"
The full tour slate will be announced Tuesday. Possible replacement drummers for Grohl include the old Smashing Pumkins drummer and the new drummer for Guns 'n' Roses.
No matter who plays the skins, the tour is sure to rock, even without emblematic lead singer Kurt Cobain. Said Novoselic, "I was getting really getting tired of carrying that guy anyway. I'm just happy he's finally off heroin."
