SOUTH BEND—CBS announcer Billy Packer shocked no one Sunday when he repeatedly made disparaging comments about the deceased saint Mother Theresa. The remarks were made during a basketball game in which Notre Dame hosted Georgetown in a Big East contest in South Bend.
The broadcast started normally, with Packer insulting every player on each team, both coaches, all three referees, and the Special Olympians who competed for charity at halftime. However, during the second half Packer went beyond his standard commentary.
He began by insulting the University of Notre Dame and Catholicism in general. “Everyone from Notre Dame is an arrogant asshole. And every Catholic is a money-grubbing, pedophile-loving, child-raping bastard.”
But then Packer’s comments turned inaccurate and offensive.
“I’ll put this simply: Mother Theresa was a whore,” an extremely agitated Packer began. “She was a tired old hag who exploited poor people to sanctify herself and she had sex with men for money. That makes her a whore. I'm glad she's dead and I s**t on her grave. Motherf**k Mother Theresa.”
A stunned Jim Nantz tried to save the moment by appealing to some of Packer’s other beloved vexations, “Billy, what do you think about mid-majors making the tournament? And what about Phil Martelli? Do you like him?”
But the irascible color commentator wouldn’t let up. Only the words “cock-knocking skank” were audible as CBS quickly cut from the game and to a commercial.
Packer hasn’t spoken to the media yet, but a CBS spokesman released this statement:
“CBS Sports is sickened by the assertions made by Mr. Packer in last Sunday’s broadcast. We realize that Mr. Packer offended many viewers by making disparaging comments of a sexual nature directed at Mother Theresa, specifically by referring to her as a prostitute and expressing his wish to defecate on her grave. We also realize he hasn’t made one positive comment since the NCAA championship game in 1989.
“Furthermore, we are well-aware that every single college basketball fan in America cannot stand to listen to him nitpick at every minor mistake and attack innocent student-athletes merely playing an amateur sport for their universities. However, it must be painfully obvious to the viewing public by now that we don’t give a damn how much everyone hates Billy. We don't care what he says. We don't care what you think. He is our lead commentator and will continue to be on our number one broadcast crew until the day he dies.”
For many college basketball fans that day can’t come soon enough.
